Positions At The Poker Table

When you log onto the First Games App to play poker, you might come across many positions at the table. These positions are very relevant in the game, and you must wisely pick your spot on the table. It could help you win or lose the game because when you are in a good position, you will be able to make better decisions. Let us take a look at the different positions on a poker table and how they can help your game:

The Early Positions

The early positions are located to the immediate left of the dealer button. These positions have to pay the bet regardless of their hand, and after the flop, they are always the first to play. There are two early positions:

  • Small blind: The player in the small blind position is immediate to the left of the dealer and must start the game with a minimum bet amount.
  • Big blind: The big blind then must continue and pay the big blind before the flop.

Once the flop is dealt, the two players must then start the game, and if they decide to fold, the player to their left will begin the game. These early position players must have very good hands to call or raise a bet. This is because you might think you have two good cards at the start of the game. But by the time you reach the end of the table, you will find that there are players with better cards, and you will lose the chips in this process. Players in the early position must only play or raise if they are confident about their hand.

Under The Gun Position

This position is immediate to the left of the big blind and will be the first to play if the other two positions fold. Therefore even in an under-the-gun position, you can be the first to have to play, so be prepared.

The Middle Positions

The middle positions have a slight advantage over the early positions as they can see what decisions the other players are making and then decide their own play. If they see that the early positions are betting and raising, they will get an idea that they have a strong hand. Therefore if the middle position players do not have a good hand, then they can fold.

The Late Positions

The late positions are the best spots on the table as you have enough time to decide your play after seeing what everyone else is doing. Here are three late positions:

  • The Hijack- The Hijack is the player to the left of the middle position. This hijack position is a good place to be because you can decide whether to raise the stakes, play your normal hand, or even fold if the others have raised high bets.
  • The Cut Off - The cutoff is the most advantageous position before the flop and the second-best position after the flop. This position is just to the right of the button or dealer position. The player in the cutoff position has enough time to decide what to play, and if everyone else has folded, they can automatically play and win the game. But it is still good to play a proper hand in this position.
  • The Button- The Button is the best position after the flop has been called as the dealer will get to play last. This player can decide at ease what to play, looking at the other moves. If they find everyone betting high and they don’t have strong cards, they can fold and not lose any money.

These positions are all relative as well because if the first few players fold, then the middle or late positions will have to play first and start the game.

Poker Etiquette

Poker etiquette is the basic courtesy of players towards each other when playing the game. You must be aware of all the rules and be respectful of each other in your online poker games. Here are some basic poker etiquettes that you must keep in mind when you play poker next:

  • Avoid Angle shooting

In angle shooting, you intentionally fool your inexperienced opponents by paying unethical moves. One example of this is playing your hand when it is not your turn just to throw your opponent off. You must avoid playing such unethical moves and play fair at the table.

  • Don’t intentionally waste time

You must take your time and think about your moves but don’t intentionally waste time. You should call, raise, bet or fold in time to avoid delaying the game.

  • Don’t Rush Others

If your opponent is taking a little longer to make one decision, you must not rush them. Let them take their time so that they do not make a wrong decision in haste.

  • Do Not Talk About Your Hand

Even after you have folded, you must not talk about your cards as long as the game is still going on. You should also not try to help others or ask them about their cards.

  • Always Pay Attention

You must be focused on the game to avoid acting late or out of turn. Do not start something new or listen to music while playing the game. You must be respectful of others’ time as well.

  • Do Not Make Fun Of Your Opponents

If your opponent has made a wrong move, you must not make fun of them and make them feel bad. They might be learning the ropes and need to gain experience in the matter, so be a sport and cheer them on.

  • Don’t complain

Even if you have a bad hand or have lost the game, you must control yourself. You should not badmouth anyone, especially the dealer and your opponents. You must play the game properly and ethically and avoid creating any bad vibes.

  • Don’t hide your valuable chips

It is considered unethical to hide your valuable chips behind your other chips to throw your opponents off. This is considered bad manners and should be avoided at all costs.

These are some poker etiquette tips that you must maintain, and you can use them in your online poker game on the First Games App.

Betting Rounds in Poker

The betting rules in poker remain the same irrespective of the variant. Following betting rounds are present in Texas Hold’em, Omaha, Crazy Pineapple, and Hold’em ++ games:

Pre-Flop

The pre-flop is the first betting round which works clockwise, starting from the player who sits to the immediate left of the big blind. Depending on the strength of his hole cards, he makes his moves. This betting round goes on in the same manner and ends when everyone has either put the same number of chips in the pot or folds. In this round, only the big blind player can ‘check’.

Flop

Once the pre-flop round gets over, 3 community cards are dealt face-up on the table. This marks the beginning of the next betting round.

Turn

One more card is dealt after which the third round of betting begins.

River

Once the final community card is dealt, the last round of betting begins. If all players, except one, fold their cards, the remaining player becomes the winner.

During the showdown, all the active players show their cards and the player with the best five-card combination wins the pot.

Basic Poker Rules For Beginners

Poker is not difficult to learn, and with time and practice, you can easily master this game. Here are some basic poker rules if you are a beginner to the game:

Deck of cards

There are many variations of the game, but in a basic poker game, you will have a standard deck of 52 cards.

Cards ranking

The cards are ranked according to face value, starting from A, K, Q, J, 10, 9, 8, 7, 6, 5, 4 , 3 ,2. Sometimes Ace can be the lowest card also, but in most poker variants, it is considered a high card. In some cases, the jokers are not included in poker games, but in other variations, printed jokers and wild jokers can also be used to complete a hand.

Rules For Playing

  • The dealer will deal you 5 cards, and you must not show them to anyone.
  • You can start arranging your cards and then call, bet, raise or fold.
  • Once the initial betting is over, you can now get rid of up to three cards.
  • If you have an Ace or wild joker, then you can discard a fourth card as well.
  • You will then pick up as many cards as you had earlier discarded from the stockpile in the centre.
  • Next, you will arrange your hand for the final showdown and do one last round of betting.
  • The hands are ranked in this order: Five of a Kind, Straight Flush, Four of a Kind, Full House, Flush, Straight,
  • Three of a Kind, Two Pair, Pair and High Card.
  • You can again call, bet, raise or fold, and then the player with the best hand wins the game.

Poker Game Variants

Poker has evolved a lot over the years and there are a number of variants that are fondly played across the world. Some of the most popular poker variants are as follows:

Texas Hold’em Poker

Texas Hold’em is the most loved and easy to understand poker game. The aim of this poker variant is to form the best five-card combination using the 2 hole cards dealt privately and 5 common cards dealt on the table.

Pot Limit Omaha

In this poker variant, a poker player has to form a winning five-card combination by using 2 of your hole cards in hand with the 3 community cards dealt on the table. In the Pot Limit Omaha Poker game, the maximum betting amount can be the same as that present in pot.

Omaha Hi-Lo

Omaha Hi/Lo is a split pot game where a player with the best high hand wins half of the pot and the player with the best qualifying low hand wins the other half of the pot money.

Crazy Pineapple

Crazy Pineapple is more or less the same as Texas Hold’em poker game. The difference in this variant is that a rummy player is dealt with 3 hole cards instead of 2. The player has to discard one hole card after the flop round and play the next rounds with 2 hole cards.

How Is Online Poker Different

Online poker is a popular option among many gaming fans as it offers a variety of choices and is more convenient than offline poker. Let us see how online poker differs from live poker:

  1. Online poker is fast-paced

When you play a game of poker online, you can play as many tables as you want and move easily from one game to another.  On the other hand, when you plan to live, you have to sit at one table and wait until the game finishes before moving to the next one. This takes more time as the dealer has to deal cards, shuffle them, distribute chips and cards and arrange the cards. In online poker, everything is automated, so it moves much faster.

  2. Several variations

In online poker, you have numerous variations of the game that you can practise to hone your skills. These include Texas Hold’em, Omaha, 7-card stud, 5-card draw and more. Whereas in live poker, you have a number of variations, but they are not as many as in online poker games.

  3.  More convenient

You can play a game of poker online at any time and from anywhere. But when you play live poker, you have to look at the timings of the casinos and have to travel there. Online poker is more convenient because it is so easily accessible.

  4. More busts

In online poker, you do not have to think about other people’s reactions to your cards, so you can play any hand you want. Even if it goes bust, you can just move on to the next game without worrying. In a live poker game, you might feel embarrassed to play a hand and lose, and so you might fold or not pass your turn.

  5. Can play with lower stakes

In live poker games, casinos generally keep the stakes at a fixed level which you cannot be below. Whereas in online poker, you will have many levels of stakes which are budget-friendly as well. Online, you also have the option of playing free practice games without any stakes, like on the First Games App.
