Rummy Rules for Beginners

Players

A regular 52-card deck is used for playing Rummy, which typically has 2 to 6 players.

Goal

To win the game, you must use the cards in your hand to create sets and sequences and be the first player to discard all of their cards.

Dealing

Up until each player has 13 cards, the dealer deals them individually, beginning with the person to their left

Sets and Sequences

Each player needs 2 sequences: 1 pure sequence & 1 with same rank, diff. suits. A set = 3-4 same rank cards, different suits; a sequence = 3+ same suit cards in a row.

Drawing and Discarding

Each player may choose to draw either the top card from the discard pile or one card from the draw pile. Then, one card must be added to the discard pile.

Melding

A player may meld their cards by arranging them face-up on the table in sets and sequences. To create new sets and sequences, a player may also contribute to other players' melds.

Joker

The joker may be used to complete sets or sequences instead of any other card.

Finishing

A player may declare by setting their cards face down on the table after arranging them into sets and sequences. Before the game is over, the other players get one more chance to create their sets and sequences.

Scoring

The person who discards all of their cards first wins the game. The other players are assessed penalty points depending on the worth of their remaining cards.
