England (ENG) and Germany (GER) will battle it out for a place in the quarter-finals of Euro 2020 when they meet each other at Wembley Stadium tonight. Both teams had a contrasting group stage campaign as the Three Lions, who is the only team to yet to concede a goal in the tournament, won two of the three matches and finished top of Group D. Three-time winners Germany had to wait till the 84th minute of their final group stage game to secure a last 16 spot.
England head coach Gareth Southgate has no fresh injury concerns ahead of the knockout stages fixture. He is likely to recall Phil Foden and Mason Mount could replace Jack Grealish in the playing eleven. Harry Maguire played the full 90 minutes against the Czech Republic and will join John Stones at the heart of the backline. Skipper Harry Kane is facing the heat as the 2018 World Cup top scorer is yet to open his account in the tournament. He has scored in his only appearance against Germany.
Joachim Low, Germany head coach, is likely to retain the same back three – Mats Hummels, Antonio Rudiger, and Matthias Ginter – despite their struggles against Hungary. Meanwhile, Leon Goretzka, who scored the decisive second goal in the final group stage game, and Thomas Muller are likely to return to the starting eleven. The duo will enrich Germany’s attacking options. Wingers Kai Havertz and Serge Gnabry would be hoping to use their pace to unsettle the English backline.
