A year-long wait is almost over as the 16th edition of the UEFA European Championship, popularly known as Euro, will kick off in Rome on June 11 (June 12 in India). The COVID-19 pandemic forced the organizers to postpone the tournament to 2021. The Euro 2020, a 24-team affair, will be held in 11 major cities across Europe. London’s Wembley Stadium will host the final on July 11 (July 12 in India). Like the 2016 edition, the top two teams from each group and four best third-placed teams will make it to the round of 16.
Group A, which comprises Italy, Switzerland, Turkey, and Wales, is likely to witness exciting matches. Euro 1968 winners Italy and 2016 semi-finalists Wales have been impressive in the ongoing UEFA Nations League. They topped the group and remained unbeaten in their respective leagues. Meanwhile, Switzerland and Turkey have struggled in the Nations League, as the former finished third in their group and the latter relegated to Group C.
Italy and Switzerland are favorites to reach the knockout round from Group A. However, Wales will offer a stern challenge despite having an unimpressive head-to-head record against both sides. The Gareth Bale-led side is likely to finish third, and Turkey could face another group stage elimination.
