2018 World Cup semi-finalists Croatia and England headline Euro 2020 Group D. Czech Republic and Scotland, playing in a major competition after a gap of 23 years, are the other two teams in the group. Both England and Croatia have never made it to the final of a European Championship, while the Czechs finished runners-up in the 1996 edition.
England fans would be hoping that their team will go the distance in Euros. The Three Lions won seven of their eight games in the qualifiers and scored 37 goals. Though, the young side couldn’t assert their dominance in the ongoing UEFA Nations League as England finished third in their pool in League A.
A tricky group – Wales, Slovakia, Hungary, and Azerbaijan – awaited Croatia in the Euro 2020 qualifiers. After an uneven start, the Luka Modric-led side went unbeaten in six games and finished top of the table. But Croatia had a disappointing outing in the Nations League, picking up just one win from six games.
A few hard-fought victories steered Czech Republic to second place in Group A of the qualifiers. They got hammered 5-0 by England in their opening game but won five of their remaining seven fixtures. Also, the Czechs emerged winners in their group in League B of the Nations League.
Five back-to-back wins in the qualifiers helped Scotland make a return to Euros after the 1996 edition. A 4-0 thrashing at the hands of Russia left them fifth in the points table and four points off the third spot. However, they claimed three wins in a row and made it to the playoffs. Scotland eliminated Israel and Serbia in penalties to seal a Euro 2020 berth.
Croatia and England are likely to battle it out for the top spot in Group D. Gareth Southgate’s men hold the advantage as they won three of their last five meetings against Croatia. Meanwhile, Czech Republic could be hoping to pip Scotland and be among the four best third-placed teams.
