Euro 2020: SWE vs POL Preview

By Parameswaran Sankaranarayanan June 23, 2021

Sweden (SWE) will be keen to wrap up their Euro 2020 group stage campaign with a win over the last 16-hopefuls Poland (POL) in the Group E fixture. Three points will help Sweden, who grabbed a hard-fought win over Slovakia, top the group. Meanwhile, Poland must beat Sweden to clinch a place in the knockout stages. Robert Lewandowski’s second half-goal and Gerard Moreno’s penalty miss helped them pick up their first point in Euro 2020.

Victor Lindelof and Marcus Danielson have been Sweden’s standout players in the tournament so far. The centre-back pair hasn’t put a foot wrong as they kept clean sheets in both the games. The Manchester United defender won the player of the match award against Spain. Alexander Isak, too, has been excellent in the two matches. The woodwork denied him a goal in Sweden’s tournament opener, and he played a crucial role in the build-up to the penalty that led to the winner against Slovakia.

Poland will be keen to seal a place in the last 16 for a second successive Euros. Paulo Sousa, Poland head coach, would have been delighted with Lewandowski, who found his scoring boots in the 1-1 draw. He will be hoping for a disciplined performance from his backline, which committed the most fouls and has got the most yellow cards among teams who have played two matches.
