Q & A

Fantasy tips and tricks: Should I pick more bowlers, batsmen or all-rounders?

This is a venue which has thoroughly supported batsmen so far and if the last two matches here are anything to go by, the batsmen are going to make merry. But the team batting second is also likely to find similar amount of support from the surface. For making your fantasy cricket playing XI for the contest between Punjab and Hyderabad, adding more to the batting strength and fast bowling department will be the right approach.

Fantasy tips: From which team should I pick more players in my XI? Which team is stronger?

Even though both the teams have identical returns so far — 3 won and 2 lost from 5 matches and overall 6 points — what separates them is their Net Run Rate. Punjab’s NRR is 0.239 and they are placed at the 3rd spot in the points table for the Indian T20 Cricket League 2022, whereas Hyderabad are at the 7th position with a NRR of -0.196. But given their current form and recent results, Hyderabad’s three-match winning streak makes them come across the stronger side for this contest and should have more of their players in the playing XI.

MORE INFORMATION: Punjab and Hyderabad are coming into this contest on the back of impressive wins. After Punjab defeated the struggling Mumbai in a high-scoring match at Pune, Hyderabad crushed Kolkata by 7 wickets in one of the most commanding wins witnessed so far in the tournament. Both the teams have several of their key players in-form but Hyderabad will remain without the services of Washington Sundar, who split his webbing and is sidelined from the action for a while now.

PLAYERS’ FORM: Punjab and Hyderabad have several of their batsmen among runs in recent matches and should not face any specific selection-related issues going into this contest. For Punjab, their captain Mayank Agarwal finally got a big score of 52 but Shikhar Dhawan got bigger, scoring a fine 70. The form of Jitesh Sharma and Shahrukh Khan is an added advantage. On their part, Hyderabad batting line-up is firing in unison and that will be a warning sign for the Punjab side. After Kane Williamson and Abhishek Sharma powered them with the bat to two wins, the middle-order batsmen Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram delivered their 7-wicket win over Kolkata.

Punjab aim for consistency in clash against Hyderabad

Punjab are sitting pretty at the third spot in the points table for the ongoing Indian T20 Cricket League. They have a total of 6 points with 3 wins in 5 matches — numbers that are identical to not just Hyderabad but four other teams in the tournament.

But what puts them at a higher pedestal is their Net Run Rate of 0.239, which could have been a lot better had they not been inconsistent. Punjab, who began the tournament with a win over Bangalore in a high-scoring contest, lost a game immediately after winning one.

This trivia is certainly one to keep in mind because now that they managed an impressive win over Mumbai in their last match, Punjab will face a tough ask to follow one victory with another, which would be against a resurgent Hyderabad team.

The Kane Williamson-led Hyderabad are coming into this contest on the back of three consecutive wins that have not only revived their campaign after a poor start with two defeats on the trot, but have rapidly established them as one of the teams to watch out for in the Indian T20 Cricket League.

Not only Hyderabad have Kane Williamson firing on all cylinders, the contest against Kolkata showcased their prowess with the ball. Umran Malik sent down thunderbolts which proved too hot to handle for the Kolkata batsmen, especially their captain Shreyas Iyer who could not fend off a yorker fired at him at the speed of 148.8kmph.

Apart from Kane Williamson and Abhishek Sharma who have done well so far with the bat, Hyderabad also have the likes of Rahul Tripathi and Aiden Markram showcasing their team’s overall strength with brilliant half-centuries in the contest against Kolkata.

Bhuvneshwar Kumar is back among the wickets and T Natarajan has been returning with at least a couple of wickets in every outing.

The raw pace and aggression of Umran Malik is a treat to watch, and even though Hyderabad will remain without Washington Sundar for some time to come, they should not miss the all-rounder if they continue to play the way they did against Kolkata.

Punjab will hope that their batsmen continue to fire together and the bowlers, led by South Africa’s Kagiso Rabada, are disciplined enough. However, Punjab will also expect better returns from Rahul Chahar, who has given away more than 80 runs in last two matches for only 1 wicket.
