Jadon Sancho’s 87th-minute winner against RB Leipzig sparked big celebrations in Dortmund and in Munich too. It confirmed a ninth German Bundesliga title in a row for Bayern Munich. Winning the 30th crown was not a walk in the park for the Bavarians. Hoffenheim thrashed the European giants 4-1 in just their second game of the season, while they failed to keep a clean sheet in 11 successive games, and Leipzig went toe-to-toe with them. Yet Bayern, who scored 99 goals in the league, won the title with a 13-point margin.
2019-20 Champions League semi-finalists Leipzig secured a top-two finish for the second time in five seasons. However, the Red Bulls would have been disappointed as they trailed Bayern Munich by just two points in February. But Leipzig claimed just two wins from their last eight fixtures. Meanwhile, Borussia Dortmund looked like missing out on a Champions League berth after inconsistent performances. Though, a seven-game winning streak sealed the third place for them.
FC Union Berlin, promoted to Bundesliga two years ago, had yet another impressive season as they pipped Borussia Monchengladbach to a spot in the play-off round of the 2021–22 Europa Conference League. None of the top-four sides managed to pick up a victory at Union Berlin’s home. Bayern Munich went winless in both fixtures against the Berlin outfit, while Borussia Dortmund and Leipzig lost. It was a successful outing for Wolfsburg, too, as they returned to the top-four after a gap of six years.
Two formidable sides – Werder Bremen and FC Schalke – suffered relegation for the first time in more than 30 years. Bremen was eight points above the relegation zone in February but claimed just five points from their next 12 games. With a tally of 16 points, Schalke became the first team to be demoted to the Bundesliga 2. The seven-time German champions failed to win a single away game in the league this season.
