The Hundred: NOS vs BPH Preview

By Parameswaran Sankaranarayanan August 17, 2021

Northern Superchargers (NOS) will face Birmingham Phoenix (BPH) at Headingley in match 31 of the Hundred.  Trent Rockets’ victory over Manchester Originals ended Northern Superchargers’ hopes of a playoffs berth. The David Willey-led team, who went winless in the first three matches of the tournament, will be hoping for a creditable fourth-place finish.

Birmingham Phoenix is guaranteed a spot in the eliminator, but Daniel Vettori’s men will be keen to beat Northern Superchargers and seal a place in the final. They are unbeaten in the last four matches, winning all of those in a comfortable manner.

Team News

Northern Superchargers are unlikely to have the services of Harry Brook and Adam Lyth for a second successive game. Faf du Plessis, too, is unavailable. The 37-year-old has left for South Africa to continue his rehab from the concussion suffered at the Pakistan Super League in June. Matthew Fisher could make his Hundred debut tonight. The 23-year-old pacer had a decent outing in the Vitality Blast, picking up 11 wickets in 10 matches.

Meanwhile, stand-in captain David Willey would have been delighted with his middle-order, which scored the bulk of the runs against Manchester Originals. Wicketkeeper-batsman John Simpson scored a fantastic 71 off 28 balls, while Dane Vilas and Jordan Thompson, too, played excellent knocks.

With a place in the final up for grabs, Birmingham Phoenix is unlikely to tinker too much with their playing eleven. Adam Milne could return to the playing eleven after missing the last match. Meanwhile, Liam Livingstone made up for Moeen Ali’s absence with a fifty in the must-win fixture against Trent Rockets. Debutant Dillon Pennington has impressed as he picked up the wickets of Alex Hales and Dawid Malan early.

Young pacers Pat Brown and Pennington have combined picked up five wickets between them against Trent Rockets. They are likely to retain their place in the playing eleven. Imran Tahir will be the lone specialist spinner, while Livingstone, too, could bowl one or two sets of five.
