Q & A

Fantasy tips and tricks: Should I pick more bowlers, batsmen or all-rounders?

These are the two most successful teams in the history of the Indian T20 Cricket League with Mumbai and Chennai sharing a total of nine title victories between them out of the 14 played so far. However, they are during one of the toughest phases with both Mumbai and Chennai undergoing transitional phases with collective performances not coming off so far for them. Mumbai or at the bottom of the pool with six consecutive defeats and their campaign virtually over why Chennai yaar hanging by the thread since they have at least one victory to show in six matches played so far. For this contest, the traditional way of picking a fantasy cricket playing XI will be the right approach which should have a long batting line-up and a good amount of fast bowling options.

Fantasy tips: From which team should I pick more players in my XI? Which team is stronger?

It will be difficult at this point in the tournament to ascertain which team is stronger among Mumbai and Chennai since both these champion sides, who have created several records and have won multiple titles in the last 14 years, have horribly underperformed this year. While Chennai have been slightly better than Mumbai in terms of their overall play and the team combinations that they have got right, Mumbai are struggling in all departments and the failure of the top guns such as captain R Sharma and all-rounder Kieron Pollard has been unfortunate. For selecting players for the fantasy cricket playing XI, it will be important to have players who have performed in this addition and not those who have the promise but not delivered.

MORE INFORMATION: This is a very dangerous state to be in for both Mumbai and Chennai since further losses in the league stage of the Indian T20 Cricket League 2022 tournament will bring an early end to their campaign, which will be certainly embarrassing for the powerhouses that they are. Apart from struggling with the bat, Mumbai have particularly struggled with the ball, feeling to penetrate and even keep a check on the scoring rate which has been pretty high against their bowlers at 9.6 runs per over. In this regards, Chennai have conceded at 9 runs per over and they too have a lot of room for improvement.

PLAYERS’ FORM: Chennai will be pleased with the fact that after five consecutive failures with the bat, their young and dependable opening batsmen Ruturaj Gaikwad was back among runs in the contest against Gujarat, they lost by a narrow margin of three wickets. Shivam Dube, Robin Uthappa and Ambati Rayudu will be their biggest hook with the bat but Chennai have to address their concerns in the bowling department. At the same time, Mumbai will seek all round improvement since their young guns such as Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma and Dewald Brevis have been among runs but not their senior players barring Suryakumar Yadav.

Mumbai, Chennai seek big win to revive campaigns

For the two teams who share nine title victories out of the 14 editions, Mumbai and Chennai will be desperate to get back to winning ways with the former side enduring a tough run in the ongoing Indian T20 Cricket League 2022 tournament with six consecutive defeats.

A defeat for Mumbai in their upcoming matches could be devastating as the R Sharma led team is currently at the last spot in the Indian T20 2022 points table and their campaign could be over if they are not able to find an end to their losing streak.

While Suryakumar Yadav and Ishan Kishan have chipped in with big scores for Mumbai, the young Andhra batsman Tilak Varma also has made his mark. However, the failure of their captain R Sharma with the bat and overall struggles for the veteran West Indies captain Kieron Pollard have also been prominent reasons why Mumbai are placed at the 10th position in the points table.

On Thursday night, the five-time title winners Mumbai will face the defending champions Chennai in what will be, or rather has been, the marquee clash of the tournament. However, given their condition and failure to win matches has hurt both the teams who will want to address the slide.

Chennai will feel that they have a slight edge over their opponents for the match on Thursday since they have more batsmen who can be described as in-form and their bowlers have also performed in a better way.

The return of form for Ruturaj Gaikwad could not have come at a better time for Chennai who are looking to revive their campaign and win matches consecutively, which is the only way for them to resurrect themselves. Shivam Dube is also a vital player for Chennai for whom Ambati Rayudu chipped in with a valuable 46 in the previous match against Gujarat.
