Poker Math

All the players who love Poker card games know that it involves math and these calculations come with vast diversions ranging from extrapolating the size of the pot to complicated concerns, including the calculations of EV. Today, it is also a psychological game, exclusively when you indulge yourself in live poker. An approach that features an amalgam of poker math and psychology built on the verge of experiences makes a player unbeatable.

This is admissible that math-based players never undermine the social aspect of the game and have shown better outcomes over the years. Being a skill-based game there are set strategies to win the poker and if you have a mathematical base to your approaches, your gameplay becomes different from others and you gain an advantage because of it. Whether you wish to calculate the odds of the pot or seek probabilities of cards in hands, poker math formulas help in turning the tables and being a proclaimed winner.

If you wish to amplify your chances of winning the online poker game, continue reading to know all about the mathematics involved.

What is Poker Math?

Players these days seek every possible way to stay away from poker math and at times find difficulty in winning the game or handling tough situations. It may sound difficult but once you know the basics, it is quite easy for you to deal with the situations. Hence, poker math is an instrument that aids in calculating the pot odds and enlightens the chances of winning the pot, eventually helping in taking the right decision within time.

There is no contradiction to saying that poker is a game of probabilities and that each and every outcome involves probabilities of occurrence. These probabilities help players in making decisions. If you are good at reading the opponents’ moves, you definitely have more chances over the opponents and to enhance an edge over opponents, you can involve poker math to calculate pot odds and be victorious even in diverse situations.

The game of poker is played using a standard deck of 52 cards and the objective of each participant remains to produce the best hand, featuring an unbeatable combination to win the game. As the game proceeds, players are involved in bets according to the strength of the cards in their hand. Mastering poker math makes you determine the pot odds, hand combinations, fold equity, and more. The knowledge of these calculations does not make you a winner but improves your chances of performing well and evaluating the possibilities in a better manner.

When is Poker Mathematics used?

The most important decision that can be made with poker math is deciding whether it is worth betting or not. It also helps in deciding the chances of chasing a card to form a winning hand.

There are the following two elements determining the probabilities:

  1. The number of cards that have a possibility of creating a winning hand and the probability that such cards will be dealt.
  2. Evaluate the odds of the pot and accordingly determine the winning amount for betting on the cards that will be dealt.

The participants with the knowledge of poker math compare the chance of getting the winning cards against the pot odds and decide whether to proceed with the bet or not.

For better understanding, suppose you have an A♥ and 8♥ in the big blind. All the players fold but the small blind asks for an extra 5 coins bringing the total pot before the flop to the value of 20 coins (that is, 2 players x 10 coins). In the next move, K♥9♦️4♥ are dealt and your competitor bets for 10 coins. Here, you need to use poker math to decide whether you should call or not.

Poker mathematics can also be used to analyse the strength of your competitor’s hand. While analysing their card strength always keep the possibility that they may be bluffing and possess a stronger hand than your expectation. According to this assumption, you have the following possibilities -

  • Out of four, there are three chances that the competitor has a better hand.
  • Out of four, there are three chances that you don’t possess a more substantial hand.
  • Out of four, there is a chance that your hand is better than others.

Here, your chances of winning are 3:1, that is you will win once for every three times you lose.

Poker Math Regarding Pot Odds

Pots odds refer to the relation between the number of coins required on the call and the amount already in the pot. It equals the percentage of absolute pot a player would bring in during a call.

Suppose your challenger bets for ₹50 in a pot of ₹100. If you decided to call with ₹50 in the pot, then the odds of the pot will be (₹50/₹200)*100 = 25% of the total pot.

There is also a rule of 4 and 2 involved in poker odds.

It is a quick shortcut to understand the percentage odds of figuring out a draw in Hold’em poker. The following are the steps to calculate it:

  • While being on a flop and waiting for your turn, multiply the outs in your hand by two.
  • When you are on the turn and waiting for the river, multiply the outs in your hand by two.
  • A situation when all the opponents are in and you are on the flop while waiting for the river, multiply the outs in your hand by four.

Once you follow the mentioned steps, the percentage you get can be compared to the pot odds and this gives you an idea of whether it is worth calling or not.

Can Use of Poker Math Help in Winning Games?

Players generally ask this a lot of times whether poker math can help them genuinely in winning the game? The calculation never makes you a winner but helps in assuming the probabilities of your win and you can accordingly plan your bet amount or even if you should leave the table.

These calculations undoubtedly improve your performance in the game and give you a bigger hand over opponents. However, you have to be cautious as your opponent might be aware of these maths and bluff others by using the same tricks. You can always prefer using poker math to improve your performance in the game.

Using Poker Math for Drawing Hands

The best situation to use poker math is when a participant decides to draw involving a flush or straight draw. Whenever a competitor makes a bet while you are on a draw, an important decision is to be made whether you should complete the draw, or fold by allowing your opponent to take the pot. Here, poker mathematics helps in deciding whether or not to call.
